Animal Control
West Baton Rouge Parish Shelter and Animal Control is a department of West Baton Rouge Parish Council. As an Animal Control department, we are tasked with enforcing ordinances concerning the keeping of animals within West Baton Rouge Parish, impounding any animals being kept in violation of those ordinances, and investigating animal cruelty complaints. As a shelter, we are tasked with doing everything we can to find positive outcomes for the neglected, unclaimed, abused, and abandoned animals in our care. We do this through community outreach, social media outreach, volunteerism, and networking with rescues and adopters across the country.
It is our sincere hope to build a trustworthy relationship with the members of our community. We strive to educate as many community members as possible on basic pet care and the importance of spaying/neutering, in addition to the ordinances of this parish.
We aim to provide comfort and basic medical care for the animals in our possession to the best of our ability. We ensure each animal that is adopted out through our shelter is either spayed or neutered, up to date on basic vaccinations and has a microchip.
Complaints
To ask for assistance regarding a nuisance situation involving an animal, to request a trap for a stray animal, or to report suspected cases of animal cruelty or neglect, call our main office number at 225-336-2428. We will need as much information (name, address, animal type/size/color) as possible to handle the complaint in an efficient manner. Upon receiving a complaint, we will assign the next available animal control officer to investigate.
Emergency Assistance
Animal control personnel will respond after normal business hours or on weekends for emergency situations only. Emergency situations shall include animal bite cases, animals in danger of dying, or an immediate threat to public safety involving an animal. Situations involving non-threatening stray animals are not considered emergencies. For non-emergency issues concerning stray animals after normal business hours, call our main office number (225-336-2428) and leave a detailed message. We will respond to your message on the next business day. For true emergency situations, assistance can be obtained by contacting the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at 225-343-9234, or your local law enforcement agency by dialing 911. They will in turn dispatch our on-call personnel.
